June 6, 1944. This “longest day” marked the beginning of the turning point on the Western Front of World War II. It was the start of Operation Overlord, which had been prepared in strict secrecy by the Allies in agreement with Charles de Gaulle.
On this historic day, 350,000 Anglo-American paratroopers (including Ernest Hemingway!) landed on 5,000 ships and 12,000 planes on the Normandy coast, beginning the liberation of France. Many of these young men (about 10,000 on the very first day) died right here, never having reached the shores of France, never seeing Paris…

Since then, every American president (as well as almost every American) considers it their duty to visit these places, to pay homage to their compatriots who gave their lives for France and rest in Normandy at the large American military cemetery. In 2009, during the grand celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the landing, Barack Obama was also here.
